WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 16TH ANNUAL WEILER CHOREOGRAPHY COMPETITION.
The 16th annual Weiler Choreography Competition was held at 6:00pm on Saturday February 23, 2008 at Columbia Dance Center. 14 choreographic works were presented by pre-professional choreographers aged 10-23 years from the greater Vancouver/Portland area.
The Weiler Choreography Competition was created to encourage pre-professional choreographers to present their creative works in a supportive, educational atmosphere, before an audience, and to receive individual constructive feedback from the judges.
Judges were Nicole Cuevas, Kevin Poe, and Robert Guitron.
First Place winner: Jolene Winner for “War Drums”
Second Place winners: Tia Chen for “Ruptured Hope”
Heather Unruh for “Baroque in Rhythm”
Honorable Mention: Gretchen Funk for “Kruscht Pine-Apocalypse”
Junior Division: Anna Dickson for “Ramalama Bang Bang”
Prize monies are to be used to further the choreographer’s dance education. Cash prizes were awarded to the first place winner in the amount of $500 and to second place winners in the amount of $250. Sponsors for these prizes are Sherrie Weiler and Jan and Winston Asai.
The Columbia Dance Performance Season consists of The Nutcracker in December, the Columbia Dance Festival Spring Repertory Concert and our Annual School Performance in June. We are also proud to host the annual Weiler Choreography Competition for emerging amateur choreographers. In addition, we offer in school performances and community outreach programs throughout the year.
